The Light and the Heat

Take a close look at this building. It’s blanketed in years’ worth of ivy. Fall was late in coming this year, a true Indian summer. But now the leaves are turning and this vine is no exception. As the days shorten and the wind grows colder, the vine leaves grow brittle and curl inward, blushing red, gold, and finally brown. But looking closely, we can see that there are also green rectangles outlining the windows that the vines have grown over.

What’s keeping their spirit alive?

Light and heat.

The sun goes down at 4:30 these days, but the lights in this building blaze away well into the evening. And the vines that twine around the windows, exposed to synthetic sunlight and indoor heat, will outlive the vines that cling to frigid bricks and shiver through the long nights.

Is life so different? When the light fades and darkness feels overpowering, where do you go for your light? For your heat?

Are your sources strong enough to carry you through the long night?

Because night will surely come.

Be prepared.
